Why Do We Celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity?

International Day for Biological Diversity

Creativity has got to start with humanity and when you're a human being, you feel, you suffer. You're gay, you're sick, you're nervous or whatever.

Marilyn Monroe

How to Observe International Day for Biological Diversity

  1. Start your own organic garden

The change can take place right in your own backyard! However, not every kind of garden is suitable for any kind of environment. The key to a good organic garden is to replace invasive plants with native ones, eliminate hard surfaces than discourage growth, and refrain from using pesticides. Show off your own, native ecosystem.

  2. Buy organic, sustainable food

Believe it or not, organic food is not just code for “expensive and weird-looking tomatoes.” Organic food has not been exposed to pesticides or fertilizers. And, although these are not necessarily harmful to humans in and of themselves, they can have negative impacts on the environment.

  3. Conserve energy

This is a bit of a no-brainer. By reducing your energy consumption, you minimize the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of your activities. In addition, you reduce the demand for companies to disturb the environment in a search for fossil fuels. While individual humans do not bear the same responsibility for the environment as big corporations do, it’s still important for all of us to preserve life on this planet.

Why International Day for Biological Diversity is Important

  1. It boosts ecosystem productivity

When there are lots of different animals living in lots of different kinds of ecosystems, then we all get to live in a better, more varied world. Biological diversity ensures that lots of different kinds of crops can grow, which feed people all over the world, and also allows natural sustainability to exist. In addition, if lots of different kinds of ecosystems are allowed to flourish, then it becomes easier for the planet as a whole to recover from natural disasters.

  2. It keeps humans alive

The more different kinds of plants and animals live on Earth, the easier it is for humans to survive as a species. Rather than limit ourselves to a few certain kinds of crops and livestock (which would limit the places on Earth where humans would be able to live), encouraging biological diversity means that humanity thrives all over the planet.

  3. We are the dominant species on this planet

While it is important for humans to survive, we also have to take into account that humans have the biggest impact on the planet of any living creature. We can be a force for positive change—encouraging growth and diversity—or we can be a force for negative change—morphing the planet into something as unable to sustain life as every other planet in our solar system. Since we have the most power to change the world, it’s up to us to use that power responsibly.

If you’re looking for a day to show your love for our planet, why not celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22? This is a day dedicated to making sure that Earth remains a place where all creatures—no matter what environment they depend on—can not only survive, but also thrive. Originally, Biological Diversity Day was proclaimed on December 29. In December 2000, however, the UN General Assembly changed the date to May 22. This was partly meant to commemorate the adoption of the Convention at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, and partly to avoid clashing with the various international holidays that occur in late December (hello, Christmas). So whether you’re from a desert climate, a forest, a valley, or a swamp, come celebrate biological diversity with us this May 22.

Celebration Golf Month May 2021

Golf Month

Aaah golf, the sport of old rich people who have the time to spend hours upon hours on the rolling green hills of a golf course, following a tiny white speck.

Many of us who have never even attempted to play golf are sure we wouldn’t like it simply because of the people that are most often seen playing it don’t seem to be the most exciting of individuals. But those of us who have tried see this pretty differently, so join us this Golf Month as we show you how much fun this sport can be!

The History of Golf Month

The modern game of golf originated in 15th-century Scotland, but the game’s ancient origins can be traced back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. Some historians assert that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent almost 2,000 years ago, and eventually evolved into the modern game.

Other historians believe that chuiwan a Chinese game played between the eighth and 14th centuries, was the father of modern golf as we know it. A Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368 entitled “The Autumn Banquet” shows a member of the Chinese Imperial court swinging what appears to be a golf club at a small ball with the aim of sinking it into a hole and would thus seem to support this version of history.

Golf Month was created just recently to encourage people who may not think they would like golf to give it a try and benefit from all this sport has to offer.

How to Celebrate Golf Month

The best way to celebrate Golf Month is to get out and play some golf! If you’re someone who already plays golf, maybe try getting some friends or family members who have never tried to join you for a few hours on the course. And if you’ve never tried, it’s the perfect time to! You’ve tried scuba diving and paragliding, and you’ve even learned to play chess…so why not golf?

If you’re still on the fence, consider some of the ways playing golf can be good for your health:

  • Playing golf gets you outdoors and keeps you there. Be honest, how much time do you really spend outside? Seeing as how most jobs are stuffy office jobs these days, we assume your answer to this question is, “Not to much”. A game of golf is guaranteed to keep you outdoors and breathing in that fresh air for approximately 4 hours!
  • Golfing burns plenty of calories. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The average golf player walks between 5 and 7 kilometers during one game, which burns about 1,000 calories. And all without breaking a sweat!
  • Golf has been proven to reduce stress levels. Thanks to the hours spent either almost alone or conversing with fellow players on a wonderfully green backdrop, golfers tend to be relaxed and more ready to face stress and challenges than players of other sports.

And as if all this is not enough, consider this: countless famous actors, singers and other celebrities adore golf, including Snoop Dogg, Bill Murray, Alice Cooper and Justin Timberlake, so chances are you may even meet one of them on the course one day. So what are you waiting for? Get celebrating Golf Month today!

Celebration Deck Safety Month May 2021

Deck Safety Month

A deck, kitted out with outdoor furniture and some lush, colorful outdoor plants, could be the pride and joy of your home. All year round, this outside addition to your house could be a tranquil haven for you, or perhaps somewhere to duck out from the rain when a downpour starts.

Although a nicely done deck can look great, it’s always important to be sure you’ve got the safety aspect of these wooden planks under control – especially if you’ve got young children running around.

This is where Deck Safety Month comes in – designed to remind those who have chosen a home with this kind of extension that there’s still the odd thing to keep an eye out for when making sure your home is a safe haven for your family.

The History of Deck Safety Month

This awareness month was created by the North American Deck and Railing Association, although of course their safety teachings are meant to be heard across the world.

The Association aims to raise awareness of some of the small things which might go unnoticed during the standard, day to day maintenance of a deck.

They encourage homeowners to ensure certain parts of the decking floor have been attached correctly, make sure that metal sections such as connectors and bolts show no sign of rust, or simply keep an eye out for rotten wood. The NADRA want to be sure deck owners have it covered.

How to Observe Deck Safety Month

If you are lucky enough to own a deck, whether that be a simple, single ground floor decking setup or a fancier two floor with a staircase job, this is the perfect month to get round to fixing those niggling things you just haven’t had the time to get round to yet.

Even if when it was built your deck was of the highest quality, as a rule a standard deck lifespan is around 15 to 20 years. All that time out in the wind and the rain can cause serious wear and tear to that wood and metal.

So even if yours isn’t especially old, it could be worth checking out the NADRA’s web page just to be sure you’re on top of any risks as they might occur.

Observe Deck Safety Month, and your deck could be standing strong for many more years to come!
