World Ranger Day 2021

World Ranger Day

There's an old saying that you don't ever finish a movie, you abandon it, and I really believe that. I never walk away from a take and pat myself on the back.

Ryan Reynolds

Around the globe, park rangers are on the front line in the fight to protect our natural heritage. World Ranger Day offers a chance to support their vital work, which ranges from environmental campaigning to education. The day is also an opportunity to pay tribute to rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

It’s estimated there are more than 100,000 reserves, parks and protected areas around the world. World Ranger Day was created by the International Ranger Federation and was first held in 2007.

Many mistakenly think America’s Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the world, but there’s one that is over 100 years older. Established by the Mongolian government in 1778, the area surrounding Bogd Khan Uul Mountain is the oldest national park in the world.

Many events are being staged around the world, including guided walks and screenings of the documentary The Thin Green Line. If there isn’t an event in your area, you could organize one – and help to raise awareness of the vital role performed by custodians of the world’s parks.

Learn about World Ranger Day

World Ranger Day is celebrated to commemorate Rangers that have been injured or killed in the line of duty. It also celebrates all of the work that Rangers do around the world to protect the cultural heritage and natural treasures of the planet.

What is a Ranger?

A Ranger typically refers to a forest ranger or a park ranger. A Ranger is a person that is charged with preserving and protecting parklands and natural protected areas.

Rangers will usually work with other volunteers and staff members in order to maintain bridges, stiles, gates, and footpaths. They are also the eyes and ears of the national park authority, spending most of their time out and about. They provide contact between the national park authority and between local people and visitors.

Rangers need to have a lot of local knowledge of the history of the national park and the wildlife, as well as where to go and what to see. They help answer questions about the park from the public. However, their work goes a lot further than this. They also have to look out for any potential problems, and because they are dealing with live animals, it can be very risky.

To become a Ranger, practical skills and the right knowledge are needed. Aside from this, a degree in environmental management, conservation, or a similar subject is typically required.

The true dangers of being a park ranger

You may think that the real danger of being a park ranger comes from the animals and the national landscape. In fact, you would be wrong! Statistics show that park rangers are facing more dangers than ever before. Assaults on park rangers are at an all-time high. In fact, park rangers are more likely to be assaulted than FBI agents and border patrol officers!

A lot of experts have spoken about the increased risk, and they believe it is down to the fact that there are more park visitors than ever before but there 50 percent less rangers today as there used to be in the ‘80s. Therefore, while Rangers are often dealing with wild animals and their safety is at risk in this sense, this is not the only danger that they need to worry about.

History of World Ranger Day

The first World Ranger Day took place in 2007, the date represented the 15th anniversary of when the IRF was founded. IRF stands for the International Ranger Federation. This organization was founded in 1992.

It was founded when the ANPR (U.S. Association of National Park Rangers), SCRA (Scottish Countryside Rangers Association), and the CMA (Countryside Management Association, which represents rangers in Wales and England), got together and signed a joint agreement.

This agreement was to raise support and awareness of the critical work that rangers around the globe do when it comes to conserving cultural and natural heritage.

How to celebrate World Ranger Day

There are a number of different ways that you can celebrate World Ranger Day and get involved. This includes the following…

Raise money for Ranger projects

One of the ways that you can play honor to rangers of the world on World Ranger Day is by raising funds for all of the critical work that Rangers do. There are a lot of different causes that you can raise funds for. This includes supporting the families of fallen Rangers, as well as raising funds for equipping and training Rangers in the field.

To fundraise effectively, you need to have an idea that is going to raise money and get other people involved. A lot of people like to do things that involve the community. For example, you could organize a fun run, a cake sale, or something along these lines.

The idea does not need to be complicated. You need to get other people involved. If you raise money and awareness, you have done your job! Of course, you can also raise money through other means. For example, you could make a craft or a certain type of product, and you can sell it online or in the local area. You can then donate all of the profits, or at least some of them, to helping out Rangers and their families.

Pause for a moment

Another way to celebrate World Ranger Day is to simply take the time to think about everything that Rangers have done for the world. Simply pause for a moment and think about all of the Rangers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our planet’s cultural heritage and natural treasures.

Spread the word and raise awareness

Of course, we can have already mentioned how you can raise awareness through fundraising. However, you can also spread the word and raise awareness through the likes of blogging and social media. There are lots of great pieces of content online, including infographics and fact sheets, which you can share with others to try and raise awareness about the work that Rangers do. Of course, you could write your own personal message to spread the word to your friends, family, and followers. It is up to you.

Host an event

Another way to celebrate World Ranger Day is to host an event. You can organize an event at your favorite place, community center, school, work, or even your home, and invite your loved ones. Mark the occasion by learning about everything that Rangers do, and making others aware of this. You can then inspire them to join the cause.

So there you have it: an insight into World Ranger Day. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about all of the incredible work that Rangers do and the dangers that they put themselves in on a daily basis.

A lot of people do not stop and think about this, and so it is nice to be able to take the day and show Rangers just how much we appreciate them. As well as paying our respect to those that have lost their lives in this job.

Mango Day 2021

Mango Day

When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat.

Ronald Reagan

A mango is a deliciously sweet and juicy fruit from tropical regions. Did you know there’s a whole day dedicated to eating mangos! How exciting is that?

The History of Mango Day

Mangos were first cultivated in India 5000 years ago and traveled to Southeast Asia between the 5th and 4th centuries BC. In the 10th Century AD where cultivation began in East Africa. The paisley pattern developed in India is said to be based off of the shape of the mango. It is the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, while also being the national tree of Bangladesh. The mango is cultivated in most frost-free tropical climates, with almost half the world’s mango supply harvested in India, with the second-largest source being China.

There is an international mango festival held in Delhi, India held every year since 1987. Included is over 50 mango growers from across the country. There are competitions and quizzes on the many aspects of mangos including different uses in cuisine as well as the many different varieties, of which there are more than 550.

Fun facts about mangos:

  • 20 million tons of mangos are grown annually.
  • They are related to cashews and pistachios.
  • They provide 100 percent of your daily vitamin C
  • A basket of mangos is a gesture of friendship in India.
  • Mango trees can grow as tall as 100 feet!
  • Most of the mangos sold in the U.S. come from Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala, and Haiti.
  • There are also festivals in other places including Canada, Jamaica, the Philippines, and the USA.

How to celebrate Mango Day

On Mango day go buy a bunch of mangos and try out different recipes. The mango you choose should be slightly soft to the tough. If it is firm, it is not yet ripe. If you happen to get a not yet ripe mango, try cutting out some cubes and putting a little salt on it, it won’t be as juicy, but tastes quite nice. Mangos are generally sweet and it’s generally just the inside meat of the fruit that is consumed.

Have a great day learning more about this wonderful fruit on Mango Day. Here’s an easy recipe that you can try.

Mango and Banana Smoothie recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 mangos (about 3 pounds), peeled, pitted and chopped
  • ¾ cup low-fat milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • ½ banana
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in blender. Pulse until your desired consistency. For a thicker smoothie, add more ice.

Why Do We Celebrate National Ice Cream Month July 2021?

National Ice Cream Month

National Ice Cream Month Activities

  1. Host an ice cream party

Next time you're having a barbecue this summer, add an ice cream bar! You can do it potluck style—supply several different flavors of ice cream and ask your friends to bring their favorite toppings. You might not be the life of the party, but your dessert will—and that's what counts.

  2. Try as many ice cream flavors as you can

How many ice cream flavors can you eat this month? We challenge you to try at least 10, but you can set your own goal and see how well you do. We know we'll be aiming for the moon—try and keep up!

  3. Invent your own flavor

To celebrate everyone's favorite month, find a recipe you can use as a starting point to invent your own ice cream flavor. You can use a vanilla ice cream recipe and add your favorite toppings, or just pour ingredients into a pan and wing it. If you have an ice cream maker, this is your time to shine. If you don't, there are plenty of recipes that you can make without any equipment!

Why We Love National Ice Cream Month

  1. It's the perfect excuse to eat ice cream

We're always looking for reasons to eat sweets—and with summer here, what better treat than a frozen one? This holiday gives us the perfect opportunity to eat as much ice cream as our heart desires. And believe us, our heart desires a lot.

  2. It pushes us out of our comfort zone

When we treat ice cream as a rare delicacy, we always order the same flavor. We go with what we know, because we're not sure when we're going to have ice cream again. However, when we have the opportunity to eat it every day, we don't have to play it safe. Cookies and cream begone—we want to try flavors like thai tea and taro.

  3. It's a gateway to other desserts

The most beautiful thing about ice cream is how many delicious desserts it can go on top of. Brownie with chocolate ice cream? Yes please! Pie with a side of vanilla? Pile it on us. This month is a great excuse to eat lots of desserts—as long as they involve ice cream, they're fair game.

This July is National Ice Cream Month, and you have Kentucky to thank! In 1984, Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month and the 15th of that month National Ice Cream Day. Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law the same year, and the rest is history! Even though the bill only specified that July 1984 was National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on—much to our pleasure. Celebrate with us this July!

World Watercolor Month 2021

World Watercolor Month

There's something so healthy about young people speaking up in unity.

Robbie Robertson

Art has been an expression of the human soul, and a salve for the same, since time out of mind. One of the most ancient art forms is watercolor painting, and World Watercolor Month celebrates it and encourages everyone to give it a try!

History of World Watercolor Month

World Watercolor Month was founded by Charlie O’Shields, creator of Doodlewash®. He realized after looking at the yearly calendar that of all the forms of art that had a day or month dedicated to them, watercolor was just plain left out!

Through his efforts, July was established as World Watercolor Month once and for all! Watercolor painting has a history stretching back to pre-history, with the earliest examples gracing the cave walls where ancient man used to live. Since that time art has played an important role in our society, bringing us together, inspiring us, and lifting our hearts during our darkest days.

It has also played an important part in education, serving to help bring equality to areas and topics typically impacted by socioeconomic boundaries. How odd is it then that art classes are one of the first sacrifices when budget cuts come along for our educational institutions?

Doodlewash turned its efforts to combating this trend by partnering with The Dreaming Zebra Foundation to provide awareness to those young men and women who may otherwise not be able to develop their artistic creativity. Even better Dreaming Zebra has created a whole new type of recycling, art & music supply recycling! They gather up gently used art and music supplies and return them to people in need.

How To Celebrate World Watercolor Month

Celebrating World Watercolor Month is easy! Just head out to your local art supply store and pick up a container of watercolor paints and something to paint on and put your creativity to the test. Once you’ve created your masterpiece, post it online with the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth. Next, it’s time to help by donating to The Dreaming Zebra Foundation to help children across the world reach their artistic potential, just 10$ ensures that a child gets art supplies!

To celebrate World Watercolor Month, we have special activities and deals!

Sarcoma Awareness Month 2021

Sarcoma Awareness Month

When men sow the wind it is rational to expect that they will reap the whirlwind.

Frederick Douglass

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

To celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month, we have special activities and deals!

Celebration Barbecue Day July 4, 2021

Barbecue Day

There’s one thing that truly tells you that it’s summer, and that’s the rich savory smell of barbecue floating through the air. In every small town all over the world, the smell of starter fluid and charcoal is a sign that something beautiful is happening in a backyard somewhere. Barbecue Day was created to laud this age-old cooking practice, and to encourage us all to get out and try our hand at creating delicious backyard cuisine.

Learn about Barbecue Day

The word ‘barbecue’ is used to describe the name of a gathering or meal, style of food, grilling device, or cooking method whereby barbecued foods are cooked and served. A barbecue can refer to a type of social occasion that features this sort of cooking. It can also refer to the way the meat is cooked, as well as the cooking method that is used.

We love nothing more than getting our friends and family together on a warm day and enjoying delicious barbecued meat with a fresh and crispy salad and other tasty side dishes. When the sun comes out, even if we only experience a mere glimmer of light, the country transforms and a BBQ is the first thing on everyone’s mind.

If you are planning on hosting an event, whether it is a celebratory occasion or a mere get together, an outdoor BBQ never fails, and Barbecue Day celebrates this! Not that we need an excuse to get the barbecue out!

Barbecuing is typically done outside by smoking meat over charcoal or wood. Of course, you can also barbecue fish and vegetables as well. There are a lot of different countries that practice barbecues, with a number of regional varieties. You can spend some time reading up on the different styles of barbecue and the various traditions. Look at the different items that are popular in various areas. For example, pulled pork sandwiches are a big hit in Memphis and North Carolina. In Maryland, pit beef prevails as the main choice, with mutton being popular in Kentucky.

There are a number of different techniques that can be used when barbecuing. This includes grilling, roasting, and smoking. The technique after which a barbecue is named incorporates cooking while using smoke at very long temperatures, as well as long cooking times.

History of Barbecue Day

First let us begin with a simple definition, what is barbecue? Barbecue is a process by which food is prepared over an indirect heat, and is flavored by the smoke produced by the source of that heat. In that one simple sentence, you begin to get an idea of just how complex the process of proper barbecuing can be. Everything you do when preparing a barbecued meal changes the flavor of the end product. That’s where you get the term “apple smoked” or “mesquite grilled”, these meals have all been touched by the flavor of the wood-smoke they were cooked over.

The origins of barbecue seem to lay with the indigenous Haitians encountered by the Spanish when Columbus first arrived. They discovered them cooking meat on sticks suspended above the fire, flavored by the smoke and heat, and brought the process back home. So it was that term barbacoa entered the Spanish lexicon, and it didn’t take long from there for it to become barbecue. The process has spread all over the world and is now used to prepare all sorts of things, from every type of meat imaginable to fruits and vegetables. Anything is possible with Barbecue Day!

How to celebrate Barbecue Day

Get your friends together for an outdoors barbecue in your backyard. Everyone loves the taste of freshly grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and steak! Those who don’t will certainly enjoy grilled pineapple and eggplant, and that’s just the beginning of what can go on your grill.

Do you like Mexican food? Fantastic! Try making fajitas with grilled bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Of course, our personal favorite is barbecue chicken, especially with a rich and savory barbecue sauce. Ultimately you can do whatever you like, but remember that Barbecue Day is all about family, friends, and food, so spend the day appropriately!

If you’re worried that you are going to set your hair on fire, you can even get BBQ caterers! There are several things you should be mindful of, though. You need to find a company that places a strong emphasis on quality.

From the cooking equipment and machines used to the ingredients cooked, everything needs to be the best of the best. You should also take a look at the various menu options they have available. Make sure you are happy with the dishes that are on offer. One of the best ways to determine the worth of a catering company is to read the reviews that have been left by others.

What do they have to say about the service they received? Would they recommend it? This is the best way to get an honest assessment. You will instantly get a feel as to whether this is a BBQ catering company you want to hire. Of course, we would definitely encourage you to try and do your own barbecue! However, if you can’t, this does not mean you need to miss out. Plus, a bit of help means you can enjoy time with your friends and family members!
