Over the year’s Humiliation Day has come to mean many things to many people. Before we go any further let’s quickly clear one thing up.

Humiliation Day is NOT about humiliating people.

If you thought that Humiliation Day was a chance to be mean at school or to humiliate someone online then you’ve got the wrong end of the stick. Humiliation day is about being humble, thankful and in some religions, closer to god and has nothing to do with humiliating another person – that’s simply bullying.

If anything the day is a reminder not to humiliate people and should be used to highlight the damage that humiliation can cause.  Although many of us now think of the term humiliation to simply mean ‘to mock’ someone, the word has in fact been used for centuries to mean ‘the absence of pride’ and in this instance means humiliation of oneself, i.e to be humble and free from your ego.

Regardless as to whether you are religious or not, the day is a celebration of the power of humility and a condemnation of the act of humiliating another person and so you will find no humiliation of anyone else here.

Now that’s cleared up, we can move on!

Over the year’s society has adapted and evolved – many of these adaptations are good, we now have more rights, fewer people die from disease and more people have access to education and healthcare, but some adaptations are not so favourable. As countries and industries have grown exponentially, some people have become more greedy, power-hungry and selfish, forgetting how to be pious and generous to those in need.

Even the invention of the internet has its downsides, opening up an avenue for online bullying and making it easier for people to act without good faith while hiding behind their screens. In short, some people have lost their way, but thankfully Humiliation Day is a chance for them to set themselves straight.

Humiliation Day is a chance to be humble for all we have, to thank those close to us and to thank God if we are religious. It is also a chance to reinforce the strong link between bullying and suicide and how humiliating another person should never be tolerated. A person who is bullied is up to 9 times more likely to commit suicide than someone that isn’t and with humiliation one of the most common tactics used by bullies, it’s vital that we raise awareness and stop humiliating others.

History of Humiliation Day

The idea that people need a day to be humble and appreciative of what they have can be traced back to the famous US president, Abraham Lincoln. In the year 1863, Abraham Lincoln wrote to the senate declaring that the country needed a day for humiliation, fasting and prayer in order to appease God. In the resolution that he wrote to the Senate, Abraham Lincoln stated that although the United States had grown “in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown” his people had forgotten God and the hand that gave them peace.

To appease God, Humiliation Day was designed to be a chance for people to pray for clemency and forgiveness and to humble themselves before the offended power. Abraham Lincoln went on to ask that people abstain from their ordinary pursuits such as going to work, or attending dinner parties or restaurants, and unite at places of public worship or at their homes to be reminded of their service to God and all that he has done for them.

Although times have most certainly changed since Abraham Lincoln ruled the US, The United States and other countries in the world, have continued to grow in power, number and wealth, and with this growth still comes greed and self-entitlement. For this reason, a Humiliation Day is still a good chance for people to take note of their privileges and to give thanks for basic amenities such as food, running water and shelter that their forefathers worked so hard for.

Although we think that Abraham Lincoln’s Humiliation Day is a good enough reason to warrant a special day, there is another Humiliation Day that we should make reference to – The Chinese-Canadian Humiliation Day. Typically celebrated as Canada Day, but for Chinese-Canadians is known as Humiliation Day, this day remembers the Chinese Immigration Act (also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act) which was passed in Canada, stopping Chinese immigration and dividing hundreds of Chinese families.

When the act was passed parents were separated from their Children and Chinese families that remained in Canada were the victim of racism and abuse. Although still a time to be humble, this Humiliation Day focuses more on the harm that segmenting a group of people can cause to families and relationships and the adverse effects such as racism that inevitably follow.

How to celebrate Humiliation Day

With many religions now occupying the United States and more people following no religion at all, the Humiliation Day introduced by Abraham Lincoln is now scarcely celebrated as a religious day. Instead, the day stands as a reminder to look inward and to remember how fortunate we are for all the things that we have.

Therefore, to celebrate Humiliation Day we should first remember how powerful our actions can be to others, and how harmful humiliation can be for a person’s mental health. Secondly, we should remember the value of humility and how important it is to remain humble despite our great and increasing successes.

Humiliation Day for Chinese-Canadians is not a day to be celebrated but is instead a chance to remember the injustices of the Chinese Exclusion Act and to acknowledge the hurt that the act must have caused for hundreds of thousands of Chinese immigrants and their families in Canada. We may not be able to change the past or our history but we should do our best to remember it to ensure that the same mistakes are not made again.

Can you imagine drinking a milkshake without a straw? Or how anyone would manage a juice box? How many soft drinks would you have spilled on yourself in dark movie theaters if it weren’t for straws? I think we can all agree drinking straws have changed our lives for the better enough to deserve their own holiday, and that’s exactly what Drinking Straw day is about: celebrating the invention and patenting of the (paraffin-covered) paper drinking straw!

Learn about Drinking Straw Day

Drinking Straw Day has been designed to celebrate this humble invention. A straw may seem like such a basic thing, but it’s a necessity. From milkshakes to iced coffees; a straw is a must for a number of drinks. This is especially the case for cocktails with mint leaves in and other elements that you don’t want to swallow!

History of Drinking Straw Day

The straws man ever used were made by the Sumerians, and were probably most often used for drinking beer, which at that time contained many solid byproducts of the fermentation process. Thousands of years later, in the 1800s, the rye grass straw became popular because it was cheap and soft. Unfortunately, it also had the tendency to turn to mush in liquid.

One day, while drinking a mint julep, inventor Marvin C. Stone became especially frustrated by straws’ shortcomings, as the taste of the rye mixed with that of his drink, giving it a grassy taste. He then patented the modern drinking straw in 1888. The first straw Stone made was just paper wound around a pencil to make a thin tube, and he then slid out pencil out from one end and applied glue between the strips.

This was already a great improvement on the rye grass straw, as it did not impart any flavor onto the drink being consumed. Stone later further refined his invention by building a machine that would coat the outside of the paper with wax to hold it together, so the glue wouldn’t dissolve in the Bourbon he liked to drink.

How to celebrate Drinking Straw Day

One way to celebrate Drinking Straw Day would be to spend the entire day drinking all liquids via straws—your morning orange juice, afternoon mineral water, you evening wine and so on. One thing to watch out for here, however, is the fact that sucking any liquid into your mouth via a straw heats the liquid up by a few degrees, and that’s why hot drinks, such as coffee or tea, should not be drunk using straws, as that could lead to scalding your mouth.

Another great way to celebrate this holiday would be to learn to make the drink that that inspired Marvin Stone to create a new kind of straw in the first place: the mint julep. Then, sit back, sipping your drink through a straw and be grateful it does not taste like rye grass! Cheers to Marvin C. Stone, ladies and gentlemen!

Mint Julep Recipe

Ingredients

Makes 2 cocktails

  • 10 mint sprigs
  • 1 ounce simple syrup OR 4 sugar cubes OR 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • 5 ounces of your favorite bourbon whiskey
  • Mint sprigs for garnish

Place half of the mint and simple syrup or sugar into one special julep cup, or double old-fashioned glass, and the other half of the mint and sugar/syrup into another. Muddle the mint well with a spoon to dissolve the sugar and to release the oil and aroma of the mint. Pour half of the bourbon into one glass, and the rest into the other. Then, fill both glasses with crushed ice and stir quite energetically, until the glass becomes frosty. Garnish with the mint sprigs and enjoy!

If a Mint Julep is not for you, another drink that needs to be enjoyed with a straw is a frozen Margarita. The Margarita is a classic cocktail, which consists of triple sec, tequila and lemon or lime juice. It is traditionally served with a salt glass rim, however, there are many variations available nowadays and a lot of people opt for sugar instead. You will see a Margarita in various forms, such as straight-up – without ice, frozen – blended with ice, and on the rocks – shaken with ice. There are also fruity varieties and different flavours incorporated into modern versions of this drink.

The Margarita is definitely one of the best summer cocktails, as it is light, refreshing and bursting with flavour. Most people opt for a frozen margarita during the warmer months, as we like our drinks ice cold when it is sweltering outside. We are going to reveal one of our simple frozen margarita recipes to follow, so you can easily enjoy this drink at home.

To make a frozen margarita you will need tequila, Cointreau, white caster sugar, orange zest, sea salt flakes and fresh lime juice. You are going to begin by making a syrup by combining water with caster sugar in a pan over heat. Make sure you choose a low heat and stir the contents constantly until the sugar dissolves. After this, you should grate in the orange zest and squeeze the lime juice. Pour all contents into a container and freeze.

Once you are ready to enjoy your Margarita, you should take the frozen mix from the freezer and blitz it in a blender. Once you have done so, add Cointreau and tequila. Get yourself a glass and rub a lime wedge around the rim, roll it in a little salt and then pour the drink inside. Finally, grab a straw and cut it in half so it fits the glass. The only thing left to do is enjoy it!

Of course, you can always make non-alcoholic versions of these drinks! Or, why not make yourself a nice, cold frappe? To do this, you need to add some water and coffee to a glass. You can add some flavored syrup, such as vanilla or caramel as well. You then need to whisk these ingredients together until there is a nice froth on the top. Add some ice, top up with milk, add a straw, and enjoy!

We also recommend that you do your bit for the planet and ditch your plastic straws on this date (if you have any!). Instead, opt for a metal straw, which can be used again and again. These are much better than the paper straws, which can be rather frustrating!

Why Do We Celebrate National Bath Safety Month?

How to Observe National Bath Safety Month

  1. Install no-slip mats in the bath

These are low-cost — but absolutely necessary — additions to the bath. They're a simple solution that helps prevent slips in the tub. And put small no-slip rugs outside the bath, too.

  2. Safety (handles) first

Install a couple of safety handles in the bath and near the toilet to prevent slips and falls and to assist those who need it from entering and exiting the tub or shower. They're also a good idea for helping those who have difficulty standing up from the toilet.

  3. Childproof the bathroom

Make sure items intended for adults — sharp razors, clippers, tweezers — are kept safely stored in the bathroom and away from curious hands of little ones.

Why National Bath Safety Month is Important

  1. It reminds us to protect those we love

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an alarming stat: drowning remains a leading cause of death — while infants and adults older than 85 are most likely to drown in a bathtub.

  2. Knowledge is power

Protecting ourselves and those we love begins by learning the facts. National Bath Safety Month inspires us to seek them out. (And you came to the right place for that!)

  3. Better safe than sorry

It may seem like too much trouble to retrofit the bath in order to protect ourselves and others from what may seem like a rare occurrence. Unfortunately, those sound like famous last words.

This January is Bath Safety month, reminding you to take some extra precautions and save yourselves from home injuries. Bathing is such a routine activity that we often neglect to take proper precautions while we’re in what is absolutely one of the most dangerous places in our homes. But there are a lot of things we can do to minimize the risk of injury in the bath. And many of these precautions are especially important for the very young and the very old. Safety bars — or grab handles — and non-slip mats inside the tub or shower are just two of the most effective — and most common — ways to stay safe in our soapy havens. Let’s look at a few more — in honor of National Bath Safety Month, which takes place every January.

It’s January 2nd, the beginning of a whole new year, and you’ve just gotten over your hangover—what time could possibly be better to be motivated and inspired? You have a whole 365 days ahead of you, and now is the time to start making them count!

The History of Motivation and Inspiration Day

Even though to many, January 2nd is in fact just about finally getting over your New Year’s Party hangover, the history of Motivation and Inspiration day is much more somber. National Motivation & Inspiration Day was passed by The United States Congress on December 18th, 2001, after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.

That was when Kevin L. McCrudden became the first and so far only motivational and leadership speaker to ever have had such a day passed by Congress, acknowledging the importance of “motivation” and “inspiration” in our daily lives.

After the tragedy that was September 11th, 2001, McCrudden felt that all Americans needed something to remind them that there were still many things to live on for. The reality was bleak at that time, and many people felt sad, scared or lost—especially those whose family members or friends had gotten killed suddenly in the World Trade Center attacks of just a few months before. McCrudden originally intended for this day to be dedicated to helping people become the best they can be and maximize their potential through the creation of annual goals.

The idea caught on quite quickly, and Motivation and Inspiration Day is now celebrated in different places across the world as well as in the United States, encouraging people everywhere to change their lives for the better.

How to celebrate Motivation and Inspiration Day

There are a few things you can do to celebrate this special day. Firstly, taking into consideration the events of September 11th, 2001 that led to the creation of Motivation and Inspiration Day, it would be good to just spend a minute or two in silence out of respect for the men and women who lost their lives to terrorism so suddenly that day. And then honor their memory by appreciating your own life and making it better!

There are many ways to do this. One is to think of someone in your life who inspires you, whether it’s your mother, father, spouse or friend and find a way to show them an appreciation for being who they are. The gesture doesn’t have to be a grand one—take your mother, father or friend out to lunch and talk about their life and what helped to make them as strong as they are, thank them for showing you how to deal with life’s challenges. Buy a nice bottle of wine for your spouse and be sure to spend the evening with him or her, telling them how glad you are to be able to share your life with them. All too often in life, people take their close ones for granted, but we should never miss a chance to tell people who are special and inspirational to us just how much we appreciate them.

You can also start doing something you’ve wanted to do for a long time, but have kept putting off. Sign up for a martial arts class, start learning a new language, make a list of books to read, or buy a cookbook full of healthy recipes to make for your family instead of eating takeout every evening.

Whatever way you decide to celebrate Motivation and Inspiration Day, make sure it changes your life for the better and helps you appreciate life more!

Oatmeal cookies, instant oatmeal, Oat grain breads, just to name a few. Oats have been part of the world’s diet. It’s been used for everything from deserts to grain for animals, and is still one of the most popular breakfast menu items in the world.

Oatmeal month is your opportunity to reacquaint yourself with this phenomenal grain, and learn to truly love this staple of delicious cooking.

History of Oatmeal Month

Every month the Whole Grains Council celebrates another staple of the worlds grain supply, and January was selected as Oatmeal Month. We buy more oats in January than at any other time of year, and they stand unique as having never had their bran and germ separated during the process.

This is why oats are so amazing for you, you’re getting the whole grain every time you open a package.

There are a variety of ways of producing oats, but the most standard and traditional method is steaming them and rolling them out between steel rollers so that they’re completely flat. How flat they’re pressed changes how quickly they cook. Those who have a love of chewy, nutty oats should give steel-cut oats a try, they’re chopped into tinier pieces to aid in the absorption of water. Unlike most oats, these are cooked for nearly 30 minutes to create a rich and thick porridge.

How to celebrate Oatmeal Month

Oatmeal month is best celebrated by trying out a huge variety of new recipes that include this incredibly versatile and tasty treat. For those who may not have their own favorite recipes, we’re going to share one of our favorites today, the delicious and magnificent treat known as:

Why Do We Celebrate National Hot Tea Month?

National Hot Tea Month Activities

  1. Drink hot tea with those you Love

Sharing a pot of tea with friends is a social event. Humans are social beings, and drinking tea is a great way for humans to connect. Nothing shows friendship more than getting your pals together over a hot kettle and chatting.

  2. Buy a new tea you have never tried

As we grow older our preferences change, and your tea choice should too! Search for new flavors online, or find stores in your community that have a wide variety.

  3. Give yourself a mental moment

Drinking a cup of brewed tea is a comfort all its own. Maybe you need a moment to recollect during the day, or you need a cup in the evening to put your thoughts to rest. The power of tea is that strong!

Why We Love National Hot Tea Month

  1. There are so many flavors of tea to choose from

Depending on your mood you might opt for a lighter tea like lavender, or if the day is hot, you may want to end it with some Sweet Texas Iced Tea. Tea flavors differ based on the region of its origin. There are White Teas (which are the least processed), and Black teas that can be mixed with spices. Green Tea is more popular because it has less caffeine than most drinks. Herbal teas can have a delicate flavor because they are blended from dried fruits, herbs and flowers.

  2. Hot Tea is known for its’ medicinal benefits

Brewed Tea was used centuries ago to cure people’s ailments, and it’s still used for the same reason. Tea is known to fight off fevers, high blood pressure, and lower stress levels. Whether you are fighting a nasty cold, or are sick with nausea, nothing beats a lemon ginger tea to soothe you.

  3. Tea is a comfort beverage

Every once in while we just need comfort food. Sometimes it’s the meals our parents use to make us, but nothing beats a cup of warmth, radiating from our hands after a long day in the cold.

Veganuary Month is a month-long celebration of all things vegan and was created to encourage non-vegans to try out the lifestyle. Often referred to as a lifestyle and not a diet, vegans who practice veganism aim to reduce the suffering of animals, help the planet and improve global health by not eating any animal products, such as meat, dairy, or eggs and also by abstaining from contributing to animal exploitation such as honey production, the creation of leather goods and the industrial farming of animals.

Although to be vegan you really need to omit all animal products and not just those in your food, Veganuary Month focuses on changing people’s diets, allowing participants to move onto avoiding animal products in other lifestyle products more gradually.

What do vegans eat?

It’s a common misconception that veganism involves just eating salad and grass. Although the diet does center around plant-based foods and for optimum health you should still try to eat a good portion of fruits and veggies, there are now thousands of alternative vegan versions of animal products, including cheese, meat, milk, and eggs, meaning that vegans can continue to eat all the things they love such as pizza, burgers, mac and cheese and ice-cream without eating animal products. Even restaurants have come to realize that there’s big money in the vegan market and many now offer exclusive vegan menus meaning that you don’t need to sacrifice taste or experience to follow a vegan diet.

What products do vegans avoid?

Aside from avoiding animal-foods, vegans also try to avoid buying or using products that contain animal ingredients, materials that have been derived from animals or products that have been tested on animals.

This includes things like wool that has come from sheep, silk from silkworms, leather from cows and honey from bees but there are thousands of animal-derived ingredients out there that go into products such as makeup, hand cream, clothing, and detergent, that you wouldn’t necessarily know came from animal origin.

This includes things such as lanolin (a grease extracted from sheep wool) gelatine (unless stated as vegetarian is derived from animal bones) and cochineal (a red dye derived from beetle shells!) Once you start looking, you’ll be surprised how many products contain animal-derived ingredients and how many are still tested on animals.

Why try Veganuary Month or consider going vegan?

People try going vegan for Veganuary Month for a number of reasons but the three most common, as stated by the founders of the event themselves, are:

  • To improve their energy levels and personal health. We all know that we should be eating more fruit and veg and perhaps the easiest way to ensure we do so is by giving up animal products and replacing them with plant-power. Even highly processed vegan alternatives to cheese and meat are often lower in saturated fat and other nasties and people tend to feel better almost immediately.
  • For the animals and their welfare. Veganism is undeniably the most animal-friendly and ethical way to live and many people choose to go vegan purely for animal rights reasons.
  • To help the environment. Finally, the impacts of animal agriculture on the environment are now widely understood and so for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint, veganism is the way to go.

Although these are the three most common reasons why people choose to celebrate Veganuary Month, there are many other reasons to give the month a try, including to help you lose weight, to detox from all the food you ate over the holidays, and to ward off diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

History of Veganuary Month

Veganuary Month was launched in the UK in January 2014 by vegan founders Jane and Matthew, who quite simply want to see a vegan world. Like any mission, Jane and Matthew knew that they needed to start somewhere and that one of the biggest barriers to veganism was a simple lack of awareness. Veganuary Month was started as an attempt to change public opinion on veganism and to provide advice and support to those looking to transition. Held in January, the event is perfectly located to attract those making their New Year’s resolutions and is now one of the more popular New Year’s pledges.

Over the years since the fist Veganuary Month in 2014, the event has grown and expanded overseas and is now followed all over the world, sparking considerable change in the vegan-food market and encouraging more food-brands to come out with vegan alternatives to their animal-based products. Growing from strength to strength each year, there are now more vegans on earth than ever, so there’s never been a better time to get on board.

How to celebrate Veganuary Month

There really is only one way to celebrate Veganuary Month and that’s by going vegan. Although it can be daunting to jump into a new way of eating, especially one that removes so many products that we consume on a daily basis, the team at Veganuary has put together a great set of resources to help new starters stick to the diet.

Remember, Veganuary focuses on eating vegan food, so you won’t need to make any dramatic changes to the other products you buy (unless you want to of course). Over the course of Veganuary Month, you’ll learn first hand how many products contain animal products and will get to try so many new vegan alternatives, many of which you’ll find you prefer to the original. Some people choose to use Veganuary Month as a month-long detox from the over indulgences of the festive period, whereas others use it as a more permanent way to transition to veganism long term.

Whatever your reasons for celebrating Veganuary Month the most important thing is that you’re doing it – so swap that steak for a cauliflower steak and load your shopping cart with fruit and veggies for a healthy, sustainable and ethical January that your body will definitely thank you for.
